Molecules dissolve and pass away, but consciousness survives the death of the matter on which it rides.

About This Quote

We are made up of molecules that get broken apart and then re-assembled by other molecules. Scientists believe that the structure of our bodies is like a huge molecule that exists in an infinite number of different forms. What makes us unique is not our intelligence or personality, but the way our molecules are arranged in a specific way in a specific location in a specific body. The same thing happens in a computer when a particular program is run. The program consists of tiny pieces called "bits," which do nothing more than change from one state to another when you tell them to.

Even though the bits have no consciousness, they can still exist—as long as someone tells them what to do. In this sense, the computer doesn't really exist until you tell it to do something. In the same way, everything we see around us is made up of atoms and molecules, which have no consciousness or feelings of any kind. But if we could somehow take all these atoms and molecules and put them together in one place, we would have a consciousness that could experience all our senses and think about things like love and death. This raises an interesting question: If every atom and molecule has a mind of its own, what makes us special? When we build a skyscraper out of marble, the atoms and molecules in the marble don't care about building a skyscraper—they can't even understand how they got there! But when we make up stories about these objects—such as how they were formed or who built them—we make them special because we give them minds with thoughts and feelings and emotions just like ours!
