More than 20 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of four protesters who were arrested for their actions during the civil rights movement in Alabama. The protesters were sitting at a lunch counter that was segregated and refused service to blacks. The Supreme Court determined that the protesters’ free speech right was violated, and ordered that they should be compensated.

The protesters were saying “sit-ins” at a lunch counter in Birmingham, Alabama. Some people found it a silly way to make a point, but the Supreme Court said the protestors had a right to make their point.
