Up there the world is divided into bastards and suckers. Make your choice.

About This Quote

The most common manifestation of the world’s ills is a situation where a person feels that he or she has been wronged by someone, and then feels that person has no recourse. In such a case, the person feels powerless to correct the situation, and eventually comes to believe it is futile to try. Such people often feel trapped in their circumstances. In the movie Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart’s character is so paralyzed by his dislike of Rick Blaine that he accuses him of being a bastard.

The truth is that at any given moment, we may feel ourselves surrounded by bastards and suckers. We may not always be able to identify each one or find a way to deal with them in a constructive manner. But that doesn’t mean we should give up trying.
