There are women named Faith, Hope, Joy, and Prudence. Why not Despair, Guilt, Rage, and Grief? It seems only right. 'Tom, I'd like you to meet the girl of my dreams, Tragedy.' These days, Trajedi.

About This Quote

I’ve been hearing this quote a lot lately. In fact, I’ve heard it from a number of people in the last week. It’s a very clever play on words and it’s one that makes a point. However, there is a problem with this little saying.

It skips over the very real issues that women face in life. The words "faith," "hope," and "joy" are well-used platitudes today...but they're not the same for everyone. Some of them are more universal than others. (Happiness is certainly one.) Some of them are more universal than others, but not all of them. For some women, these words can be hard to manage.

They can be used to explain away problems instead of fixing them, they can be used to avoid facing reality, or they can be used to justify keeping things exactly the way they are. Some women find that these "happy" words make it easy to get through difficult times; they're like an external anesthesia, numbing you to the pain of the situation you're in. Other women find that these words don't work for them at all; they let their lives spiral out of control while they indulge in hopeless delusions about how things will always stay the same no matter what happens. For some people, despair is the greatest joy in life...and for some people it's just another word for anger -- anger at circumstances that have no power over their own lives, anger at circumstances that do have power over their own lives but can't be changed, or anger at circumstances that don't exist at all because their lives are pretty good already. So when someone tells you that you're lucky because you were born into a situation where there's no need for you to feel anger or rage or fear or sadness...you might want to take note of who's telling you this and who they are...because if it's someone who thinks most women should feel joy and gratitude for being given the opportunity to exist at all, then I've got news for you: It's not luck; they're lying to you. And if they're telling you this while giving you pitying looks because your life is so much harder than theirs because your parents are divorced or your family treats you like garbage or your beloved pets have gone missing, then please take my word for it -- they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
