Yasutaka Tsutsui was born in Tokyo and grew up in Sapporo, Japan. He is a graduate of the Graduate School of Letters at Hokkaido University (1989), and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba (2002). He has been working at the National Museum of Nature and Science as a curator since 1994.
