He practiced law in Pittsburgh for six years, then moved to Cleveland, where he practiced law for seven years. In 1912, he became the first general counsel for the City of Cleveland. In 1917, Mr. Scranton was appointed United States Trustee in Bankruptcy by President Wilson and served until 1927 when he retired from public service.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, Supreme Court Bar Association, American Law Institute, and the National Municipal League. Mr. Scranton died June 6, 1966 at age 92 at his home in Severna Park, Maryland. Scranton was one of America's most prominent bankruptcy attorneys before becoming a writer of fiction and nonfiction books revolving around the theme of personal achievement.
