About that time he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and received his commission as an ensign in 1941. He served on the USS Missouri (BB-63) during World War II at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa where he was wounded by shrapnel in his left hip, right arm and right leg.
