William Dunbar (died 1573) was a renowned poet and literary scholar of the 16th century, and one of the most significant figures in Scottish literature and culture. He is best known for his collection The Lyfe of the Noble and Right Worthy Prince, Lorde James, Thrie Estaitis, and The Scots Metrical Psalmes. After he received his Master's degree at age seventeen, Dunbar moved to London to study law at Lincoln's Inn. At the University of Oxford he studied rhetoric and philosophy under Richard Mulcaster and William Grindal. In 1566, he became a secretary to Sir David Lindsay, a principal secretary of state for Scotland under Queen Mary.
