William Christopher Handy was born in Memphis, Tennessee on July 22, 1911. He wrote the classic "St. Louis Blues" in 1917 while still in school. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in music in 1932
He co-founded the famous blues band the Memphis Jug Band in 1939. He joined the army during World War II and served thirty years until his discharge in 1968. After the war he married his wife, Mildred Mae Thompson Handy.
He played with numerous bands until he retired in 1979, at which time he spent his time writing, performing, and collecting blues recordings.
