Wendell Willkie was the Republican nominee for President in 1940, losing to Franklin Roosevelt. He was a political strategist who fought against the spread of Communism in Eastern Europe. His pro-American foreign policy stance during the late 1930s was considered one of the reasons why he lost to FDR. He served as chairman of the Republican Convention in 1944 and 1948
Willkie also served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1953 to 1955, replacing Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., who had been appointed president of Harvard University in 1951.
