Walter Tevis was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on July 22, 1910. He died at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, on March 24, 2002. Tevis is best known for the novel The Hustler (1961), which was made into a movie starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason.
