Wael Ghonim is an Egyptian online activist, blogger, and computer engineer who rose to prominence during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.Ghonim was born in 1981 in Cairo, Egypt. He completed his master's degree in computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2007.After the protests in Tahrir Square on 25 January 2011 he became an active participant online organizing demonstrations across Egypt. He faced allegations of treason for his role in the events.
He was arrested on 26 January 2011, after he refused to leave Facebook following a court order to do so. He served two months imprisonment before being released due to lack of evidence against him

On 2 September he was arrested again while travelling through Cairo airport on his way back to the United States, and charged with having ties with foreign entities including Al Qaeda. He was released on bail three days later and left Egypt on 11 October 2011.
