He was honorably discharged in 1917 due to his disability from the Spanish Flu epidemic. He was injured while serving in France, and although he received a medical discharge, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor (France's highest decoration) for his service in 1918. He married Mary Beth Zindel on January 22, 1919 and had one son and one daughter.

He was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity at South Carolina University and worked for a time as a teacher in Columbia before opening his own business, a wholesale nursery supply company, where he also won two state agricultural extension awards for his work in developing tree varieties that grew well in Florida. During World War II, Mr. Hickson joined the Navy, where he served until being discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1946.
