Victoria Woodhull was an American businesswoman, editor, and political activist. She became the first woman to run for President of the United States from a nationally recognized political party. In her day, she was a strong voice for women's rights and a leader of the women's suffrage movement. Woodhull was born in 1838 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents were abolitionists who were active in the Underground Railroad movement.
Her father, Samuel Woodhull, was a physician who eventually became city physician for Cleveland and mayor of Cleveland from 1855 to 1856. Her mother, Eliza Woodhull, was active in antislavery activities as well as the women's rights movement.
