Victor Serge was born in Paris, France on 10 December 1890. He was an influential writer, activist, anti-fascist campaigner and communist opponent of the Soviet Union. Serge was imprisoned by the Russian secret police (GPU) for over three years during the First World War on suspicion of treason. His prison experience radicalised him and caused him to develop extreme antifascism and Communism, which led him to become a member of the Communist Party of France
He later joined the Red Army Faction (also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group).
