Uday Mukerji is a leading entrepreneur and the Chairman and Managing Director of the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). In 1981, Uday founded the first Indian company to bid for a major oil exploration block in Nigeria. In 1982, he created Reliance Petroleum. In 1986, he expanded his business by taking over Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC), the largest company in India by market capitalization as well as by revenue.
In 1997, Uday took over the leadership of Reliance Industries from Dhirubhai Ambani, who died that year. Today RIL has interests in petrochemicals, natural gas processing and marketing, oil refining and marketing, fertilizers and other agro-based products, information technology outsourcing, retailing and aviation. Uday Mukerji serves on the Board of Directors of The Giving Pledge.
