U Thant was born in Burmah, British Burma on November 9, 1909. He was educated at Rangoon University, graduating in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. During this period he became interested in politics and, in 1932, he joined the Independent Burma Socialist Party (IBSP), becoming the General Secretary of the party in 1936. He was elected President of Burma's Legislative Council in 1937 and later that year was elected to Parliament as a member of the IBSP
On August 16, 1945, U Thant became Acting Foreign Minister for Burma at the time of its independence from Britain; he was appointed Foreign Minister soon after. On January 1, 1947, U Thant took up his appointment as Permanent Representative to the UN. He was also Secretary-General of the General Assembly from April 1, 1961 until January 31, 1965.
He died on July 19, 1974.
