U Thant was born in Burmah, British Burma on November 9, 1909. He was educated at Rangoon University, graduating in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. On August 16, 1945, U Thant became Acting Foreign Minister for Burma at the time of its independence from Britain; he was appointed Foreign Minister soon after. On January 1, 1947, U Thant took up his appointment as Permanent Representative to the UN. He was also Secretary-General of the General Assembly from April 1, 1961 until January 31, 1965.

He died on July 19, 1974.
