Ty Cobb was born in rural Georgia, the son of a blacksmith. He was raised on a farm and showed little promise as an athlete before enrolling at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he played baseball. After graduation, he played winter baseball in Cuba, where he met the Detroit Tigers' owner, Charles Comiskey. Comiskey signed Cobb to his major league team in 1905, and Cobb became one of the greatest hitters ever to play the game
At the peak of his career, Cobb led the American League in batting average four times, was its leading home run hitter for six years running, and holds many other records to this day. His lifetime batting average of .367 remains unmatched among American League players. He also became one of the first three Hall of Famers to have his number retired by MLB.
