He organized and led the Red Army during the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1921. In August 1941, during World War II, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, thereby resulting in a total collapse of government authority and Stalinist rule. In May 1942, Stalin called for the arrest of Trotsky and other "murderers" of the Bolsheviks who had taken power during the Russian Revolution of 1917.
