Toshimi A. Kayaki is a writer, who was born in Tokyo, Japan. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and won several awards for her novels, including the American Library Association's Alex Award (for The Kite Runner), National Book Critics Circle Award (for The Last Dance of Hari Seldon), PEN/Hemingway Award (for The Last Samurai), and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize (for The Last Samurai)
She also wrote two biographies: Hirohito: The Life of Japan's Shōwa Emperor and the work that earned her the Dayton Literary Peace Prize - The Last Samurai: A Novel.
