Tommy Douglas, the father of Medicare and Canada's most famous and influential social reformer, led the creation of Canada's universal health care program. A native of Scotland and trained as a medical doctor, he moved to Canada in 1935 and became leader of the Saskatchewan CCF Party. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1940 and became Minister of Health in 1945. In 1951, he became Premier of Saskatchewan and led his party into an historic election victory that gave them a majority government for the first time since Confederation.
