In 1672 he served as an ensign in the English army during the king’s reign, and at the end of his service he traveled to Italy where he performed under royal patronage. In 1674 he married Anne Bracegirdle and shortly after, they moved to France where Thomas performed with great success before returning to England in 1679. The couple had two children, both of whom died at young ages.

In 1683 Otway returned to Italy where he stayed for five years, performing on stage in London’s Drury Lane Theater. While there he published several works including A Tragedy of Caligula (1688), Oedipus (1689), and Cleomenes (1691). Otway returned to England where he continued to perform on stage until his death in 1713 at age sixty-three.
