In 1897 he was appointed assistant professor of zoology and paleontology at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught for three years. In 1900 he accepted a position at Cornell University, where he remained for the rest of his career. In 1913 he became president of the Carnegie Institution for Science, a position he held until 1928.

He was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1914 to 1916. He died in Ithaca, New York, in 1928.
