Thomas Hoving was the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1978 to 1987. He is now a Senior Fellow at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. In addition, he is a prominent figure in New York's museum world and a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the American Museum of Folk Art. He was a member of the board at the National Academy Foundation from 1982 to 1993 and chairman from 1988 to 1993
