Thomas Francis Meagher was a 19th century Irish nationalist and one of the leaders of the Young Ireland movement. He was a leader of the Irish Rebellion of 1848, first as commander of the Irish Brigade, which fought for the establishment of an independent Irish republic, and then as general in the newly formed Irish Army. After the failure of the rebellion he fled to France, where he joined the French Foreign Legion before returning to Ireland in 1852.
