Thomas Arnold (16 October 1573 – 30 June 1641) was an English classical scholar and headmaster of Rugby School. He is known as the "Father of Modern English Education." The son of a butcher, he began his career as a schoolmaster and continued to teach for the majority of his life. He became Headmaster at Rugby School in 1612, and held that position for 35 years. He is remembered as the "organizer" and "founder" of Rugby School, and is considered to be one of the foremost classical scholars of his time.
