Theodosius Dobzhansky, also called Theo Dobschutz, was a Russian-American geneticist and evolutionary biologist who contributed to the study of population genetics. Born in Russia, he emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1920. He received his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1941. Dobzhansky is best known for his work on speciation and quantitative genetics, particularly the role of neutral (or non-selective) mutations in evolution. He helped develop the modern evolutionary synthesis, which brings together Mendelian genetics with Darwinian evolution to explain the mechanisms of evolution.
