Theodore Hesburgh was born in Chicago and educated at the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern University. He taught at several universities before becoming president of the University of Notre Dame in 1952. He was one of the most influential and respected figures in higher education. During his tenure, the university grew to become one of the largest and most prestigious academic institutions in the United States
His leadership has been recognized by numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States government, and he was named honorary Commander-in-Chief of The Grand Army of the Republic by President Lyndon Johnson.
