Born in Brazil, Terry Gilliam moved to Britain with his family when he was a child. He studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London and was involved with the London film-making community including a spell as a member of the Pop Group. While working as a graphic designer for the BBC, he wrote and directed a series of short films that caught the eye of producer Tony Richardson who invited him to make his feature debut on the big screen.
