He never married nor did he ever take any form of alcohol or meat. He spent most of his time in meditation, sadhana (spiritual practice), yoga, and prayer. His peaceful, unhurried lifestyle made him well-known.

At the age of sixty-two he undertook eighteen months' solitary meditation in the Himalayas. He passed away on March 26, 1982 at Belur Math, aged ninety-two.
