In 1923, they signed a contract with the Mutual Film Corporation to make one film a year for the next four years. They made 10 movies together before their partnership ended in 1927 after three years of working together. When Laurel and Hardy were still under contract with Mutual Pictures, they appeared together in a short comedy sketch called "The Music Box" (1925).

The pair later appeared in a series of short subjects produced by the Hal Roach Studios beginning in 1928. Laurel and Hardy returned to feature films in 1939 with The Flying Deuces. The two also made two guest appearances on radio programs produced by Fred Allen and Jack Benny, respectively.

In 1947, they appeared together in the film Sons of the Desert. In 1960, they made their final appearance together as themselves in the film The Music Goes Round My Head. Laurel died on April 9, 1965 at age 80 from heart failure brought on by a stroke he had suffered five years previously.
