Stan Brakhage was born in 1937 in Los Angeles, California. He attended UCLA and the University of California at Berkeley, and went on to study at the California Institute of the Arts. Brakhage is considered a pioneer of American experimental and avant-garde cinema, and is considered one of the most influential film artists of all time. He worked with such musical artists as John Cage, Sun Ra, Philip Glass, Matmos, Suzanne Ciani, and Meredith Monk.
