The recipient of this letter was so impressed that she decided to send a copy of her book to Stacey's mother. This led to a long friendship with the author Mary Pope Osborne, and later, after Osborne had moved on from writing, the friendship lasted until Osborne's death in 2012. In 1981, at age twenty-two, Rowcliffe was hired as an editorial assistant for Scholastic Books.

She had been saving her money from this job for more than two years and purchased her first computer. In 1992, she left Scholastic and moved to New York City where she attended Columbia University and got a master's degree in Education. Rowcliffe has been happily married for over fifteen years to her husband of eleven years.
