Sophie Scholl was born in 1893 in Munich, Germany. She was the daughter of a prosperous businessman. Her family was strongly involved in civic life and she attended several lectures given by her father, Johann Scholl, at the University of Munich. The White Rose Society distributed leaflets condemning the war and demanded "freedom for political prisoners." On March 22, 1943, members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Dachau concentration camp. Sophie Scholl, her brother Hans Scholl, their friend Christoph Probst, and Willi Graf were executed by guillotine four months later for their work as White Rose leaders.
