SJ Perelman was born in 1906 in Russia. He emigrated to New York City in 1927 and began his education at the High School of Music and Art. His father died in 1928, and the family moved to Los Angeles, where he became a vaudeville entertainer. In 1936, he married the actress Veda Ann Borg, who was to appear in many of his plays
Following a long career as a writer, director, film producer, and advocate for the arts, Perelman was appointed to the National Council on the Arts by President Lyndon Johnson. In 1968 he was awarded a National Medal of Arts by President Richard Nixon.
