Simon Rattle began playing the piano at the age of seven. He studied piano at the Royal College of Music in London, graduating with Honours. He was a prizewinner in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Belgium, was awarded a British Council grant to study in Italy, and has also studied with the pianist Robert Houlihan. He has received many awards for his virtuosity, including first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition, third prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, top prize at The Barbican Keyboard Competition, winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000 , and recipient of an Arts Council grant to pursue his career as a soloist.
