Simon Kuznets (born April 23, 1903, Yekaterinoslav Governorate, Russian Empire - died December 20, 1982, Washington D.C.) was a Russian-born American economist who did his graduate studies at the University of Vienna and Columbia University. He became the first director of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in 1934. Professor Kuznets was an influential figure in the field of economics. The theory of economic growth, which he developed with his colleagues at the NBER (including future Nobel laureate Simon Kuznets), has become one of the most important tools for economists to study economic development and to understand how economies change over time.
