He fought at many battles against the Spanish, but it was at the battle of Carabobo that his fame as a soldier was established. General Suchet made him prisoner after losing twenty-two thousand men in what is known as "the battle of the heroes". After four years he succeeded in escaping to Jamaica and after further adventures made his way to New York.

While there he joined an expedition which invaded Florida and won his great victory over General Sola at St. Vincent's Bluff. Later that year he led an invasion into Peru which overthrew the royalists and established the independent republic of Bolivia; then he returned to Colombia where he met Simon Bolivar's life took another course.

He became president of Colombia in 1828 and held office for two terms, for twenty-nine years. In 1834 he retired from public life on a pension granted by the Colombian congress on the grounds that his health had been injured by overwork and his eyesight destroyed by sparks from gunpowder used in battle by his troops. On December 2d, 1837, President Bolivar died in Santa Fe de Bogota surrounded by all those who had served him as friends during his long career as a soldier and statesman, some of whom had been with him even before they were soldiers or statesmen.
