Sidney Brenner is a British geologist, one of the founders of the science of archaeology, who has made notable contributions to the development of geology in Britain. He was born in London in 1901. Educated at the City of London School, he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1920 where he read for a Bachelor's degree in geology. Brenner became an assistant at the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1922 and was appointed demonstrator in geology at University College, London in 1924
He won his PhD in 1930 for a thesis on the correlation between sea cliffs and volcanic activity in Essex, but was not allowed to publish it due to concerns about its safety during World War II. During his time at University College he started work on The Geology of Roman Britain (1934–42), which was published after his death.
