Sherrod Brown was born on July 7, 1956 in Elyria, Ohio. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Akron in 1978 and a law degree from Cleveland State University in 1981. In 1990, Brown moved to the private sector as a staff attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor and then as an assistant general counsel for Amoco Corporation. In 1993, he returned to public service as staff director for Senator John Glenn and later as chief counsel for United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
In 1995, he was appointed by Governor George Voinovich to serve as U.S. representative of the International Trade Administration within the U.S. Department of Commerce.
After two terms in Congress, Brown was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and served there until his retirement in 2018; he is now Senior Counselor at Brownstein Hyatt Farber & Schreck LLP and executive director of the Sherrod Brown Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at Youngstown State University College of Law where he teaches classes on civics and public policy issues facing Ohio families and businesses.
