Seth Low was a leading financier, real estate developer, and philanthropist. In 1854 he purchased a majority interest in the Brooklyn Bridge Company from John Roebling for $300,000. In 1855 he founded the Brooklyn Trust Company and in 1857 opened a branch in London. In 1863 he became a founder of the New York Stock Exchange
As a result of his business dealings, Seth Low's fortune exceeded $10 million. He was a trustee of Columbia University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was born in Oceanside, New York in 1821 and died there on October 27, 1902 at age 79.
