Selma Dabbagh was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1979. She began writing her first novel at age twelve and published her first short story in a magazine at age fourteen. Selma moved to the United States in 2000 and began attending Columbia University, where she received a degree in English Literature. Her books have been translated into Arabic, French, German, Italian, Korean, and Spanish
In 2011 she won the PEN/Hemingway Award for her book, The Third Half of Paradise. In 2012 she was named a Morrison Fellow by the New York Foundation for the Arts for her essay collection A Minor History of Crime. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.
