Sam Ervin was a U.S. Senator from North Carolina and the namesake of the eponymous committee in charge of Senate Watergate investigations. He served as a member of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and the Korean War, and was awarded his Purple Heart and Air Medal for his actions in these conflicts. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ervin served as a North Carolina State Senator from 1949 to 1953, and later served as a United States District Judge for the Western District of North Carolina from 1953 to 1966
He was elected to the United States Senate in 1966, and served until his death in 1978.
I used to think that the Civil War was our country's greatest tragedy, but I do remember that there were some redeeming features in the Civil War in that there was some spirit of sacrifice and heroism displayed on both sides. I see no redeeming features in Watergate.Sam Ervin
