In 1910 he became a film actor. His most famous works are "Les Vacances de M. Hulot" (1903), "La Caverne" (1913), "Le Jour se lève" (1914), and "Cinq-Mars" (1918).

During World War I he was a war correspondent in the Balkans and Russia. After the war he made a number of films including "Les Ducs de Monte Carlo" (1922) and "Le Joueur" (1924). In all he wrote or directed more than one hundred films.
