R.W. Rivers was a psychiatrist who worked with schizophrenia, among other conditions. He was born in New York City in 1878 and died there in 1965. As a child he had been fascinated by the stories of explorers, adventurers and visionaries and by the novels of H
Rider Haggard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne and Jack London. These stories, along with his discovery of chemistry at age 14, led him to study medicine at Harvard University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1902 he began to study psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital under Dr.
Edward M. Shepard. In 1906 he took a position as psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital in New York City where he remained until 1927 when he went to South Africa to establish a psychiatric department at the Union Hospital for the Insane at Johannesburg.
