Rufus Choate was a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and later a classmate of Henry David Thoreau at Harvard. He became a successful New York City lawyer and later was elected to Congress as a Democrat. Choate supported the abolition of slavery and became President of the American Anti-Slavery Society after John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. He financed John Brown's defense and helped Brown escape from prison
He was also the only person to be expelled from Harvard College for his anti-slavery activities.
