Ruby Dee is an American actress, singer, and author. She is known for her portrayal of the blind African-American woman Mabel opposite Jackie Robinson in the 1956 film "The Jackie Robinson Story." This performance earned her Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress. She has also received Golden Globe nominations for the same roles. She appeared prominently in several other films, including "Houseboat" (1958), "A Raisin in the Sun" (1961) and "The Color Purple" (1985)
For her work on stage, she was nominated for Tony Awards in 1964 and 1965.
