Landau received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota, where he was a clinical research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry. He was a clinical psychologist at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, before accepting an appointment as assistant professor at Saint Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.
He also served as consultant to the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Boston and as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University in Boston.
