Born in 1919, Rotraut Susanne Berner was awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1950. In the years that followed she held a number of academic positions at various institutions, including the University of Cambridge and Trinity College in Dublin. She is a member of both the British and Austrian Academies of Science and Arts, the Austrian Academy of Education, and a Corresponding Member of the German Academy. She is also a member of numerous learned societies around the world including the Japan Academy, the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Society of Arts in London
