In July 2017, Bremner was cast as a new lead in James Corden's Carpool Karaoke series with Corden and John Legend. Because of his Scottish accent, he was initially referred to as Rory 'Brennan' Bremner on social media by fans who mistakenly believed that he had changed his name to avoid confusion with other Scottish comedians.
However, it was reported that the latter was actually an ironic nickname given by fellow performer Simon Brodkin (aka Lee Nelson) to Bremner after they met at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe during their first encounter because Brodkin thought that Bremner looked like someone who might have changed their name to avoid confusion with other performers who shared their surname, including fellow comedian Rory Bremner (no relation). The misunderstanding apparently arose because of the similarity between the names Rory (and Brendan) and Brennan (and Brendan).
